🎬 BESTIA (THE POLISH DANCER) dir. Aleksander Hertz A rare chance to see Pola Negri before Hollywood — young, magnetic and already displaying the extraordinary screen presence that would soon make her one of the first truly international stars of cinema. Born Barbara Apolonia Chałupiec, she transformed herself into Pola Negri and went from Warsaw stages and Polish silent cinema to Berlin and eventually Hollywood. ✨ Bestia is especially precious today: it is the oldest surviving film starring Negri and the only surviving film from the Polish period of her career. When it later reached America as The Polish Dancer, the American press praised Negri’s “emotional acting” and her “extraordinary power of expression.” Film historian Frank Noack described Negri’s performance in The Polish Dancer as “innovative,” while recognising the film itself as solidly directed, photographed and cast. And perhaps the most beautiful description of Negri comes from legendary film historian Lotte H. Eisner: “She does not act; she is scarcely an actress. Quite simply, she exists.” Eisner also described her as “supple as a panther.” 💃 Bestia gives us the fascinating sight of a legend before the legend was fully formed — dance, sensuality, gesture and raw cinematic charisma preserved from the very beginnings of Polish cinema. 🥂🎂 And this screening will have an additional reason to celebrate: we’ll also be celebrating Andrey’s birthday! So expect an evening of great cinema, Pola Negri, good company and a birthday toast. 🎞️✨
